The Politico: An Update On Colorado's Benevolent Primary

NOVEMBER 21ST, 2007 | Polis for Congress

Since the holidays are supposed to be a time of giving — and overeating — I thought it might be time to update you guys on a unique primary in Colorado in which Democrats were asked to support their congressional candidate by donating coats and canned goods to charity.

After two events, supporters of Jared Polis have given their candidate a commanding lead in the volunteer primary. At a community service event in Boulder, Colo., over the weekend, Polis backers donated 559 cans of food and 58 winter coats, while supporters of the two other Democrats in the race — Joan Fitz-Gerald and Will Shafroth — combined for 87 coats and 92 cans of food.

Cans count for one vote and coats count for five, so Polis increased his lead in the very much unofficial primary, with 1,445 votes to Fitz-Gerald’s 585 and Shafroth’s 342.
