Boulder Daily Camera: Sounding Off Online and Loving It

AUGUST 12TH, 2007 | Polis for Congress

David Thielen’s blog isn’t a political powerhouse, but this summer, it’s emerging as a must-visit for local politicians.

While popular political sites like Daily Kos or Instapundit.com draw millions of visitors per month, Thielen’s site — titled “Liberal and Loving It” — racks up more modest numbers.

But Thielen seems to have found a niche. While thousands of people across the country write angry posts about the Bush administration or the Democratic Party primary, very few people are opining online about Boulder politics, something Thielen realized this summer during the run-up to a special Boulder City Council election.

“It hit me that nobody else is blogging about these issues,” he said.

Thielen is, and it’s paying off. During the election, he says he started seeing between 250 and 350 visitors daily — a huge spike that’s since leveled off to about 40 daily visitors, twice as much traffic as he used to get.

He’s been meeting with City Council candidates, who often comment on his blog. Jared Polis, Democratic contender for the 2nd Congressional District, set up a lunch date with Thielen — who promptly blogged the encounter in a post titled “My Lunch With Jared.”
