Statement on McCain/Bush Plan to Expand Domestic Oil and Gas Drilling

JUNE 20TH, 2008 | Polis for Congress

Boulder, CO - Reacting to recent attempts by President Bush regarding oil shale development and opening our shorelines to invasive and environmentally disastrous oil drilling, Jared Polis today blasted both Bush and McCain for energy policies that are shortsighted solutions to a problem that, if not addressed properly, will negatively impact generations to come.

“As millions of families face the grim reality of record-high gas and utility prices, it is clear that McCain shares President Bush’s shortsighted solutions to our nation’s long-term energy crisis,” said Polis. “The only way to strengthen America’s independence from oil and gas interests is to make a true investment in renewable energy technology, including the expansion of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden.

“We also have to help move groundbreaking technology into the market through incentives, university-industry collaboration and other public-private partnerships. I believe that the development of alternative fuels, such as biofuels, as well as energy-efficient products, such as hybrid and electric vehicles and Zero-Energy Homes, holds the key to both becoming energy independent and addressing global warming.

“My plan for energy independence calls for preserving our natural resources for future generations. As a matter of personal and collective integrity, we need to stand up for the environment by initiating and supporting policies that emphasize sustainability through innovation and collaboration. We must reject the false dilemma that pits economic growth against environmental stewardship, such as the current threats to the Roan Plateau and developing oil shale on the Western Slope.

“Cleaning our air and water, securing wildlife habitat and open space, safeguarding the health and safety of our children, and promoting economic opportunity can be accomplished through fair policies based on cutting-edge scientific and technological advances and a spirit of working together.

“Here in Colorado, we have great potential to be a leader in this new green economy. And in Washington, we need people in Congress who will be independent of these special interests pushing to drill and develop seemingly everywhere, and who will stand up to the powerful oil and gas lobby.”

Unlike Polis’ opponent, Joan Fitz-Gerald, who continues to take thousands of dollars from the oil and gas industry and has called the oil and gas industry the “goose that lays the golden egg” for Colorado, Polis is not accepting any money from Political Action Committees and has vowed to fight in Washington to limit the influence lobbyists and special interests have on making policy decisions.
